FG will complete 2nd Niger Bridge next year: Fashola

By Ikenna Uwadileke / Silas Nwoha
The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, reaffirmed that the construction of the second bridge over the Niger will be completed next year.

The minister gave the assurance at a Nigeria News Agency (NAN) forum in Abuja on Sunday, to mark the sixth anniversary of the current administration.

According to Fashola, the bridge, which will serve as a major link between southeast and southwest Nigeria, will be delivered between the second and third quarters of 2022.

Records show that construction of the bridge began on September 1, 2018, with an estimated construction cost of 336 billion naira when the contractual agreement was signed.

However, the Minister made no mention whether the cost of constructing the facility had changed since the start of the work.

He said the project would facilitate the flow of investment to the Southeast once completed.

Fashola said construction work had risen above water level, explaining that most of the bridge work had been done underwater.

“So what you are seeing right now is the final work. The substructure that involved building cement structures underwater often costs a lot of money.

“We are expected to complete the bridge next year between the second and third quarter,” he said, saying construction time has been lost due to COVID-19.

The bridge is 1.6 km long and is equipped with other ancillary infrastructure, including a 10.3 km motorway and interchange, which is expected to be completed next year.

The bridge stretches from Asaba in Delta State to Ozubulu, Ogbaru and other communities in Anambra State.

The existing Niger Bridge, connecting Onitsha and Asaba, was completed in December 1965.

It was built by the French construction giant, Dumez. (NAA)
