FG inaugurates committee to tackle illegal refineries in Niger Delta

By Ebere Agozie The federal government on Thursday inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to fight illegal refining of crude oil in the Niger Delta region. The Acting Solicitor General of the Federation (SGF) and Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Umar Mohammed, who represented the minister, said the move was aimed at stopping the leakage of revenue. “The main mandate of the committee is to recover illegally refined petroleum products (crude oil) from pits dug around the creeks of the Niger Delta.” Committee members came from the Ministry of Defense, the Nigerian army, the Navy, Defense Headquarters, the Nigerian Civil Defense and Security Corps, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. of Petroleum Resources, and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency. The Nigerian News Agency recalls that the army deactivated some refineries in the Niger Delta in August. Operation Delta Safe troops deactivated several illegal refining sites and recovered large volumes of petroleum products refined and crude oil in the region Acting Director, Defense Information, Brig.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko, had revealed that military operations in Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta had led to the discovery and deactivation of several illegal refining sites. also recalls that a total of 21 furnaces, 12 dugouts and 58 metal storage tanks containing 2.329 million liters of illegally refined diesel and 2.19 million liters of stolen crude oil were recovered. Two boilers and 750 bags of illegally refined petroleum products were also recovered. , one speedboat, one AK-47 rifle, one FN rifle, three smoke rifles, 12 manufactured RPGs, 263 live rounds, 20 7.62mm NATO rounds and 7.62mm special ammunition, among others.
