FG Don Set Committee To Revamp National Youth Service Corps

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government don set up one committee to carry out major changes to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. Dis decision come after plenty concerns don arise about safety of corps members, bad facilities, and whether the NYSC still fit for today’s social and economic realities. The inauguration of dis committee happen in Abuja on Tuesday, as key figures from government, civil society, and private sector gather for the event.

For the event, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, talk say the NYSC don play significant role in building national unity and supporting young people since 1973. He emphasize say, “The issues of corps members’ safety, infrastructural challenges, and the broader question of the scheme’s relevance in an increasingly dynamic socio-economic environment are among the key concerns. However, these challenges also present opportunities that require urgent, visionary, and determined action.”

Olawande explain say the committee go analyze how NYSC dey operate and suggest better ways to make am safer, more innovative, and impactful for youths. “The outcome of this review must align with broader national development objectives, positioning the NYSC as a strategic tool for youth empowerment and nation-building,” he add.

The committee go review current NYSC policies, engage with people nationwide, and suggest changes to laws, policies, and operational procedures. Dem go also find better ways to fund, monitor, and improve the NYSC program. Dem expect say the final report go reach the minister within a specific time.

Also for the event, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, announce government plans to launch a Teachers’ Corps and a Medical Corps. Dis two initiatives go provide opportunities for NCE graduates and healthcare workers to serve in rural areas. Alausa explain say, “The Teachers’ Corps would help bridge educational gaps and create a pathway to government employment, while the Medical Corps would strengthen healthcare delivery in underserved areas, addressing critical issues such as maternal and child health.”

The Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Usman, stress the importance of enhancing technical and vocational skills training. “Such alignment would empower young people to make meaningful, long-term contributions to their communities and to the nation as a whole,” Usman conclude.
