Federal Poly Bauchi sacks 2 lecturers over sexual harassment, 30 students for exam malpractices, certificate forgery

The Board of Directors of the Federal Polytechnic in Bauchi on Sunday approved the dismissal of two teachers, Abubakar Baba and Adebusoye, accused of allegedly sexually harassing their students.

Rector Sunusi Gumau said this during a briefing to reporters after the 98th council meeting on Sunday in Bauchi.

Mr Gumau said the decision was made after a thorough investigation into the matter.

He stated that Mr. Baba was a lecturer in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, while Mr. Sunday was a lecturer in the Department of General Studies.

“This is the final verdict of all that has made waves in the media regarding the issue of our staff reported on suspected cases of rape.

“This issue of Abubakar Baba appeared on August 4, 2021. In the rules of the polytechnic, if a problem of this magnitude occurs, the complainant must write and immediately she wrote, I asked the staff to be questioned.

“When we questioned him, he responded and the answer was unsatisfactory, and we established a committee to thoroughly investigate the matter to a logical conclusion.

“We did and after the committee submitted its report, the senior management nomination and discipline committee met, invited the suspect, cross-examined and made our recommendation to the board.

“Today, the council finally approved the dismissal of Abubakar Baba from the services of the Federal Polytechnic of Bauchi,” said the rector.

Mr. Sanusi further disclosed that Mr. Sunday was dismissed from his polytechnic duties with immediate effect.

The rector said concrete evidence had been established against Mr Sunday for sexually assaulting his student.

He added that the victims had military backgrounds, which prompted perpetrators to expose themselves.

Mr Gumau said the two lecturers were no longer on staff at the polytechnic and assured that their dismissal letter would be delivered to the necessary state security agencies for appropriate action to be taken.

“In Baba’s case, the father of the student involved is a soldier, while in Sunday’s case, the victim is the sister of a soldier.

The rector congratulated the government of the State of Bauchi, the traditional leaders and his communities for their support for the institution.

Meanwhile, the rector revealed that the institution’s Academic Council of Students also expelled 30 students for various offenses.

Gumau said 14 of the students were expelled for exam malpractice while 16 others for certificate forgery.
