FCT SWAN Demand Better Welfare for Athletes as 2024 Sports Festival Draws Near

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Capital Territory chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (FCT SWAN) has demanded for improved athlete welfare as a key strategy to boost FCT’s medal haul at the upcoming Gateway 2024 National Sports Festival.

This call came during a courtesy visit to the Youth and Sports Development Secretariat in Abuja, where FCT SWAN Chairman Mr. Kelechi Onwudiwe met with top officials ahead of the festival scheduled for next month.

Onwudiwe emphasized that better support systems are essential for athletes to perform effectively. He noted that FCT athletes previously finished ninth at the last National Sports Festival, and a more robust support mechanism could help them secure better positions this time around.

“We are committed more than ever to supporting your vision and amplifying the achievements in FCT sports,” Onwudiwe stated. “However, we strongly appeal for enhanced welfare for our athletes and officials to ensure they can compete at their best.”

The meeting, held at the Arts and Culture building in Area 10, included a congratulatory note to Permanent Secretary Mrs. Nancy Nathan and newly appointed Mandate Secretary Alhaji Ibrahim Geidam. Onwudiwe recognized this engagement as a crucial step towards fostering collaboration in sports advancement.

In his response, Mandate Secretary Alhaji Ibrahim Geidam acknowledged the visit, sharing that it was only the second official engagement with a sports body since his appointment. He reaffirmed the Secretariat’s dedication to closely working with SWAN to realize the sports development vision of FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike.

“This is an important partnership. We look forward to working hand-in-hand with SWAN to achieve the Honourable Minister’s sports development goals,” Geidam noted.

Additionally, Mrs. Nancy Nathan briefed the delegation on significant infrastructure developments, including upgrades to the Area 3 Sports Complex and new multi-purpose sports facilities across FCT’s councils.

“We understand the important role the media plays in sports promotion. SWAN will be carried along at every step,” Nathan affirmed, ensuring that SWAN members will have full access to cover the upcoming National Sports Festival.

During the visit, FCT SWAN also extended condolences over the passing of Mrs. Bosede Momoh, a dedicated member and respected football referee. The delegation observed a minute of silence to honor her contributions to grassroots and women’s football.

“We are deeply saddened by her loss,” Onwudiwe commented. “Her legacy in FCT sports will always be remembered.”

The FCT SWAN delegation included Vice Chairman Victor Okoye, Secretary Samuel Ahmadu, Financial Secretary Niyi Busari, Welfare Officer Joan Iwuchukwu, and Assistant Financial Secretary Friday Joshua.
