Fathers Day: You must live up to responsibility – cleric charges

By Millicent Ifeanyichukwu

An Anglican clergyman, the Reverend Canon Sunday Odude, on Sunday ordered men not to give up their divine responsibilities to their wives, no matter how resourceful, active and spiritual the wives might be.

Odude, the presiding priest of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Amje, Alagbado, Lagos, gave the charge in a sermon he preached to mark Father’s Day 2021.

He spoke of: “The Christian House Guided by the Word of God”.

According to him, it is not in accordance with the word of God that the woman directs or directs the household.

“God is very interested in the role of the father in the home.

“The father is expected to take responsibility for providing for the needs of the family by fulfilling his God-given role.

“The support or assistance of the woman does not and should not make her head; it is not God’s plan.

“The implications are that when the mother takes on the role of head of the household, the family fabric breaks down, not because of fighting or quarrels,” Odude said.

The clerk cited a passage from the Bible (Ephesians 5:23) to support his point.

“The husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. The main parent is the father.

“When a father stops doing what he should be doing or ignores his responsibilities at home, the family stops growing as expected,” he added.

He warned that when challenges can render a man unable to fulfill his responsibility, his wife’s support or assistance should not be wrong in transferring the leadership of the family to the wife.

He advised women to be submissive to their husbands regardless of their social status.

According to him, this would properly guide the children in their married and family life in the future.

He advised men not to enter into marriage without preparation to avoid failing in their responsibilities. (NAA)
