Expert advises cutting down cholesterol to avoid liver disease

By Franca Ofili

Dr David Okorafor, a doctor, has advised Nigerians to reduce their cholesterol intake to prevent the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) known as fatty liver disease.

Okorafor, Senior Radiology Registrar, Alex Ekwueme Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki made the call Wednesday during a webinar meeting.

According to him, NASH is inflammation of the liver and damage caused by a build-up of fat in the liver.

“It’s part of a group of conditions called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Many people have a buildup of fat in their liver, and for most people, it doesn’t cause any symptoms.

“But in some people, fat causes inflammation and damages liver cells. Because of the damage, the liver is not working as well as it should, ”he said.

Okorafor said the disease can worsen and cause scarring in the liver, which leads to cirrhosis.

He said other causes of the disease are common among obese people who abuse drugs and don’t exercise.

Okorafor said people need to prevent fatty liver disease by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

He advised people to cut back on fatty foods, saying to avoid refined foods and reduce meat consumption.

Okorafor says omega three oil is good for you and people should get more of it.

Mr. Danbubar Muhammed, president of the Nigerian Medical Students Association, called on the government to improve immunization in the country

Muhammed said the association would raise awareness of the problem of fatty liver disease.

“We will advocate with communities to educate them on the issue of fatty liver disease,” he said. (NOPE)
