Expect more goals, cohesion from Super Eagles against Sudan — Awoniyi

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi assured Nigerian fans of more goals and team cohesion when they take on Sudan on Saturday at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

Awoniyi told the Nigerian News Agency on Thursday in Garoua after the team’s training session that the team was eager to get started.

reports that all 27 players from the camp took part in the session at the Stade Roumdé Adjia training ground in Garoua.

The Union Berlin striker, who along with Kelechi Iheanacho led Nigeria‘s attack against Egypt on Tuesday, said the team’s focus was entirely on Sudan for now.

“Tuesday’s game against Egypt is gone. As players, we know that we are here for serious business, so we fight together and win together as a team.

“The preparations for the match against Sudan are going well and we expect nothing but victory. Hopefully, with our hard work, we can make it count and get all three points against Sudan on Saturday,” he said.

The Germany-based player who has represented Nigeria at under-17, under-20 and under-23 levels said the coaching staff led by Eguavoen had focused on training them more to achieve better results.

“This is being done for us to avoid missed opportunities.”

Awoniyi, who is having a breakout season with Union Berlin in the Bundesliga with nine goals in 17 appearances, secured a better performance against Sudan.

reports that the Super Eagles defeated the highly rated Egyptians 1-0 in their opening match on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles currently lead Group D with three points, followed by Guinea-Bissau with one point each and Egypt with no points, after the first group matches.
