Euro 2020: Spain, Poland in danger of early exit

Spain and Poland are at risk of failing to advance to the round of 16 at the 2020 European Championships after drawing 1-1 in Group E on Saturday.

The result leaves the Spaniards with two points from their first two matches and the Poles with just one.

Both teams need to win their last group matches to avoid an early exit.

Spain manager Luis Enrique made just one change to the side that drew 0-0 with Sweden, bringing forward Gerard Moreno into the starting XI and pairing him with much-criticized Morata .

Meanwhile, Poland played a 5-3-2 formation, with Robert Lewandowski their most advanced of their players.

The Pole started looking to bring the game to Spain with Mateusz Klich shooting just from a distance before Spain started to take control, with Morata’s chip attempt from a clear head.

Although the Spaniards were gaining ground as the half progressed, the Poles kept their form and Jordi Alba had to use his pace to stop Lewandowski’s soaring rise.

Spain took the lead with a moment of suspense in the 27th minute when Moreno crossed for Morata to slip the ball past Wojciech Szczesny.

The flag was raised for offside, but after being revised by the VAR, the goal was declared legal.

Moreno hit a free kick soon after as Spain continued to dominate, but Poland nearly equalized in the 43rd minute.

That’s when Karol Swiderski’s left-footed shot bounced off the post towards Lewandowski, whose powerful shot was well blocked by Unai Simon.

Lewandowski equalized Poland in the 53rd minute, passing Aymeric Laporte to score with an imposing header as the defender complained of a push.

But Spain got a penalty just a minute later, when Jakob Moder was penalized for catching Moreno high and late with his crampons.

Moreno got up, but sent his penalty against the post and Morata, who rushed forward, couldn’t lead the rebound into the open goal.

Ferran Torres replaced Dani Olmo and Pablo Sarabia replaced Moreno as Spain continued to seek victory, Szczesny saving a rebounding effort from Morata.

The Spaniards controlled the ball, but like against Sweden on Monday, they failed to impose enough pace in their game to really disturb the Polish defense.

Two defensive errors from the Poles led to some scrambling goal, Rodri firing a powerful shot straight at Szczesny.

But unless Spain get their game back in their opponents’ penalty area, they are in danger of falling apart.
