  The National Potato Conference starts today September 21 at the Asmara Palace under the theme A vision and harmonized work for the sustainable supply of seed potatoes The two day Conference will be attended by eleven international organizations including the International Potato Centre the Agricultural Research Institute in the Center and Horn of Africa the Irish Potato Research and Breeding Institute the Food and Agriculture Development Authority of Ireland the National Agricultural Research Institute of Tanzania Self Help Africa and Vita Speaking on the occasion Mr Tsegay Berhane Director of the Halhale National Agricultural Research Center said that the aim of the conference the first of its kind is to share Eritrea s experience in seed potato breeding and initiate selected seed potatoes that have not yet been introduced as well as gain insights from the experiences of partners and other countries In the conference research papers focusing on the agricultural sector in general and the importance progress and genus of the potato in particular potato pests and means of control laboratory potato breeding the strategy and experience of the Irish Potato Research and Breeding Institute as well as the influence and challenges of seed potatoes on small scale farming in Kenya and the Horn of Africa region

2 The two-day Conference will be attended by eleven international organizations, including the International Potato Centre, the Agricultural Research Institute in the Center and Horn of Africa, the Irish Potato Research and Breeding Institute, the Food and Agriculture Development Authority of Ireland, the National Agricultural Research Institute of Tanzania, Self Help Africa and Vita. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tsegay Berhane, Director of the Halhale National Agricultural Research Center, said that the aim of the conference, the first of its kind, is to share Eritrea‘s experience in seed potato breeding and initiate selected seed potatoes that have not yet been introduced, as well as gain insights from the experiences of partners and other countries.

3 In the conference research papers focusing on the agricultural sector in general and the importance, progress and genus of the potato in particular, potato pests and means of control, laboratory potato breeding, the strategy and experience of the Irish Potato Research and Breeding Institute, as well as the influence and challenges of seed potatoes on small-scale farming in Kenya and the Horn of Africa region.
