Enugu, Jan. 7, 2020 The Enugu State Government says it has concluded plans to make fertilizer available early to farmers at a subsidized rate in the 2020 farming season.

The Chairman, Enugu State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture, Mr. Hillary Ugwu told the Nigeria News Agency in Enugu on Tuesday that agriculture was given serious consideration during presentation of the 2020 budget.

Ugwu, who is a member representing Enugu East constituency, said that looking at the budget holistically, the issues of agriculture subsidy were captured with special emphasis on fertilizer subsidy.

He said the Agriculture Ministry which he supervised would not hesitate to embark on procurement of fertilizer that would go round all the farmers in the state.

According to Ugwu, fertilizer would be evenly distributed across the 17 local government areas of the state to encourage farmers and boost food production.

“The Ministry of Agriculture has been directed by Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to ensure that fertilizers are available to all our farmers at a subsidized rate before April ending.

“This is to enable our farmers confront the issue of massive food production aggressively with all manners of seriousness,” he said

Ugwu said arrangement had been made to ensure sincere and timely distribution of the fertilizer immediately they were supplied to the ministry, adding that government would punish anybody found sabotaging the process.

He explained that it was the ministry’s belief that when the plans were efficiently implemented, the state would witness massive food production in the 2020 harvest.
