EndSARS: Judicial panels submitting reports – NEC

By Chijioke Okoronkwo

The National Economic Council (NEC) said it had started receiving reports from judicial commissions set up across the country after the protests against SARS in 2020.

Mr. Laolu Akande, senior special assistant to the president for media and publicity, office of the vice president, briefed State House correspondents on Thursday after a virtual NEC meeting anchored from the presidential villa, Abuja.

The virtual NEC was chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Following the #EndSARS protests in 2020, NEC ordered the immediate establishment of state-based judicial commissions of inquiry to investigate complaints of police brutality or related extrajudicial killings.

The panels aimed to bring justice to all victims of the disbanded Special Anti-Theft Squads (SARS) and other tactical police units.

“You will recall that these judicial panels were recommended after the adoption of a resolution by the NEC.

“Today some of the governors reported on the progress that has been made.

“And the vice president also announced that there will be a special session of the NEC very soon that will review all the reports available so far from those judicial panels that have been set up to address the concerns of people from the police brutality issue and other concerns.

“So very soon a session of the NEC will review these reports and point a way forward,” Akande said.

He said the council also received a report from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the NNPC on the issue of the terminated strategic alliance agreement with an idea of how to resolve the issue and move forward. .

According to him, deliberation on the matter will continue at the next council meeting. (NAA)
