Ember months: FRSC Suleja takes campaign to motor park

By Ibironke Ariyo

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) RS7.22 Suleja unit command in Niger launched a smoldering month campaign to reduce the number of fatalities during the period.

A statement from the unit commander, Deputy Corps Commander (ACC), Mr. Moses Odogiyon, in Suleja on Sunday reiterated the need to keep the campaign burning for months.

Odogiyon said the campaign aimed to raise awareness about safe road use and continue to raise awareness among key stakeholders.

He said the smoldering months were a critical period in the operational activities of the FRSC, occasioned by the increased movement of people and vehicles with colossal negative consequences.

The Nigerian News Agency reports that the theme of this year’s Ember Months campaign is: “Maintain a Safe Speed: Avoid Night Trips and Enjoy a Quality Road Experience”.

Odogiyon said the campaign which was carried out at Kwamba Car Park in Suleja was a way to educate drivers on how to keep the roads safe during the smoldering months.

He said the main causes of road accidents were lack of concentration and sleep behind the wheel.

He called on drivers to rest for 30 minutes after each five-hour driving session to reduce the fatigue that was the cause of the crashes.

He also warned drivers to avoid overloading, speeding and consuming alcohol to minimize crashes in the area.

According to him, we do not want anyone to die. We don’t want drivers to turn wives into widows. We don’t want a driver to turn children into orphans.

“Drive with care. We don’t want to transport any corpses this year during the smoldering months and beyond, ”he said.

Odogiyon said all hands should be on the bridge as road safety is a shared responsibility and called on everyone to follow road safety rules.

reports that the FRSC said it has partnered with other stakeholders to educate the automotive public about safe driving to reduce the number of fatalities on freeways during the holiday season.

Also reports that representatives of various transport unions, drivers, industry leaders and several village chiefs were present to launch the months of embers campaign in Suleja.
