EFCC recovers N152bn, 6m in 2021 – Official

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, said it recovered N152.090 million and $ 386.22 million from various cases in 2021.

Wilson Uwujaren, Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, made the disclosure in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Monday.

He said the anti-corruption agency also recovered £ 1,182 million and 1,723 million Saudi riyals during the year under review.

Other recoveries are 156,246 euros, 1,900 South African rands and 1,400 Canadian dollars between January and December 2021.

“The recoveries also include a digital currency component with a large amount of Bitcoin and 0.09012 Mr Ethereum,” he stated.

Mr Uwujaren said that the EFCC headquarters in Abuja made the majority of the recoveries at N67.250 billion, $ 375.66 million and £ 1,152 million pounds.

“This is closely followed by EFCC Lagos Command, which led Naira’s recoveries with N70,316 billion, $ 9.286 billion and £ 21,500 pounds.

“The Kaduna Zonal Command came in third in terms of Naira recoveries with a total sum of N3.339 billion.

“The Ibadan Zonal Command took the same position in terms of recovering dollars in the amount of $ 387,385 dollars,” he added.

Mr. Uwujaren quoted the commission’s chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, as saying that the money was direct and indirect recovery for federal, state and local governments, as well as corporate organizations and crime victims.

Mr. Bawa praised the commission’s management and staff for their performance and urged them to redouble their efforts in 2022.
