Edo Cricket League: Clubs must own feeder teams as requirement, says Akpata

Uyi Akpata, president of the Edo State Cricket Association, said that clubs that will participate in the Edo Men’s Cricket League must have feeder teams.

Akpata told the Nigerian News Agency in Abuja on Wednesday that the goal was to ensure the development of the game at the base.

Akpata, who also serves as the president of the Nigerian Cricket Federation (NCF), said players from the national team are also participating in the 10-week tournament.

“The eight teams participating in the tournament that started on Saturday have feeder teams. We made it a requirement for everyone and we hope that it will soon give the expected result.

“The state of Edo is one of the most important states in the country, in terms of grassroots development and we want to keep improving on that.

“This time, we have more teams competing compared to the previous year and this is due to the growth that the game has experienced in the state.

“Some players on the national team are also part of the league and will add flavor to the tournament,” Akpata said.

The teams are Crusaders Cricket Club (CC), No-Limit CC, Integrity Force CC, Invictus CC, and Dolphins CC.

Others are Ambrose Alli University (AAU) CC, Uniben CC, and U-17 CC.

However, No Limit CC currently tops the table with four points, following a win in their only game so far, while Integrity Force CC is next with four points also after one game, with the net run rate separating both sides.

U-17 CC and AAU are third and fourth respectively, with the former winning their only match while the latter winning one of their two matches played.

Uniben CC is next winless in two games, while Crusaders CC and Dolphins CC are yet to play a game in the league, at sixth and seventh respectively.

Invictus CC is in last place, having lost its first and only league game thus far, with a net run rate of -2,350.

Meanwhile, a team’s net running rate is calculated as the average of runs scored in the game or competition.

The tournament is expected to end in February 2022.
