Ecuador loses third health minister in 40 days
Ecuadorian Health Minister Mauro Falconi resigned from his post less than three weeks ago, the government announced on Wednesday following in his predecessor’s footsteps.
Falconi is the third health minister to resign in 40 days.
Local media reported major problems on Tuesday and Wednesday with the deployment of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine in Quito, where the elderly had to wait more than eight hours before being vaccinated.
El Comercio newspaper reported that there were also coordination issues with the delivery of the beatings, saying similar issues occurred in Guayaquil.
“Our seniors deserve the greatest respect. What happened today has no justification.
“I have called for the resignation of the Minister of Health and he will be replaced by Dr Camilo Salinas,” President Lenin Moreno tweeted on Wednesday.
Cabinet Secretary General Jorge Wated Reshuan described the events in Quito as “unacceptable” in a tweet.
His predecessor, surgeon Rodolfo Farfan, had already been appointed to the post on March 1 to replace Juan Carlos Zevallos, who resigned at the end of February amid allegations of favoritism in the deployment of COVID-19 vaccines.
Farfan resigned on March 19.
Salinas is the sixth health minister in the current government and the fifth since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, El Universo reported.
Ecuador, with a population of around 17 million, has so far recorded more than 328,000 infections and nearly 12,000 deaths from COVID-19. (dpa / NAN)
