ECOWAS Notes to Political Officers and Military Advisors of the Diplomatic Corps

Exchanges with political / military advisers should take the form of solid discussions aimed at eliciting informed responses and perspectives.

The ECOWAS Directorate of Political Affairs is organizing a briefing with Political Officers and Military Advisors of the Diplomatic Corps of Permanent Member Countries of the United Nations Security Council (UN P5) as well as regional neighboring countries accredited to Nigeria and the United Nations. ECOWAS September 27, 2021.

The virtual meeting would allow, among other things, a debriefing of senior political and military officials from the diplomatic corps on key peace and security issues while also providing updates on political developments in the region.

Exchanges with political / military advisers should take the form of solid discussions aimed at eliciting informed responses and perspectives for ECOWAS and the diplomatic community, to address political and security challenges in the region.

The speakers will also adopt the report of their last meeting held on March 30, 2021 against the backdrop of a dynamic political and security environment, even as the West African region grapples with security challenges and transitions. policies in some Member States.

Member States currently facing security concerns in the form of an upsurge in terrorist attacks include Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger; with recent attacks reported in northern Côte d’Ivoire. Political instability remains a major concern after the August 2020 coup in Mali and another in Guinea on September 5, 2021 amid constitutional reforms linked to the political process in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.

Through its Mediation and Coordination of Regional Political Affairs (MCRPA) division within the Directorate of Political Affairs, ECOWAS seeks to strengthen inter-institutional collaboration on issues relating to peace and security with the United Nations, the Union African Union, the European Union and other international partners. The Division also supports political and mediation processes in Member States and provides regular political and security information to ECOWAS ambassadors, development partners and sister ECOWAS Directorates.
