ECOWAS Action on Mali

We also echo ECOWAS concern about the likely destabilizing impact of Russian-backed Wagner group forces in Mali.

WASHINGTON DC, United States of America, January 11, 2022 / APO Group / –

The United States commends the strong measures taken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in defense of democracy and stability in Mali following its Extraordinary Summit on January 9, 2022.

We share ECOWAS’s deep disappointment with the Malian transitional government’s lack of action or progress in organizing elections, as it pledged to do after the August 2020 coup. We support ECOWAS’s decision to impose sanctions. economic and financial resources to urge the transitional government to fulfill its promise to the Malian people to return their country to democracy.

We also echo ECOWAS concern about the likely destabilizing impact of Russian-backed Wagner group forces in Mali. As noted in the Department’s statement of December 15, 2021, these forces will not bring peace to Mali and will divert resources from the Malian Armed Forces in the fight against terrorism.
