Ebonyi stakeholders laud JUSUN’s strike suspension

By Christian Ogbonna

Some Ebonyi justice actors applauded the Nigerian Judicial Staff Union (JUSUN) for suspending its two-month-old strike.

In separate talks with the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) in Abakaliki on Thursday, stakeholders called the development group’s decision welcome.

NAN recalls that JUSUN had, on April 6, ordered its members nationwide to close all courts in the country in order to strengthen its agitation for judicial autonomy.

A lawyer, Mr. Mike Nwaorie, said that the suspension of the strike was in the interests of the nation and of justice.

Nworie, however, advised federal and state governments to make the welfare of workers a priority as they remain the engine room for the nation’s development.

Another lawyer, Chidi Raymond, also welcomed the development, saying he would not wait to return to work.

Union President Ebonyi, Mr. Okoh Nnachi, said the suspension would provide an opportunity to continue negotiations to resolve the dispute.

Nnachi said they were ready to return to work as directed by their national leaders, stressing their determination to promote justice for the people.

He further thanked the Chief Justice of Nigeria and all the heads of courts for their patience during the course of their action.

NAN recalls that the national leadership of the union ordered its members on Wednesday to return to work on Monday, June 14.

The decision to suspend the strike follows the intervention of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Judge Ibrahim Muhammad and the National Council of the Judiciary. (NAA)
