Ebonyi CJ releases 12 inmates from Afikpo detention center

By Douglas Okoro

Ebonyi Chief Justice Judge Elvis Ngene on Tuesday in Ukpa, Afikpo, Afikpo North Local Government area of Ebonyi, released 12 detainees from the Afikpo detention center during a prison birth.

Ngene said the purpose of the delivery was to exercise the powers given to him by the 1999 Constitution as amended, which aimed to decongest the detention center.

The chief justice stressed that the exercise was not intended to open the door of the establishment to suspects, but rather to rescue inmates who deserved it.

“The exercise consists of granting freedom to those who could have suspended their sentence if they had been tried and sentenced to serve their sentence.

“The exercise also involves giving bail to those who have been taken into custody for minor cases that are bail offenses and whose case information has not been filed.

“Delivery to prison is not for those who are on trial for offenses punishable by the death penalty or those whose cases are already before the courts of competent jurisdictions,” Ngene said.

He added that the exercise would be a regular exercise and pointed out that another exercise would be carried out in December at the facility.

The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that the exercise is the first to be carried out by the CJ which was inaugurated as the fourth head of state judge by Governor Dave Umahi on March 29.

NAN also reports that a total of 23 cases have been heard; two of the 12 released detainees were outright released while 10 were released on bail and 11 detainees were remanded in custody.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ndubuisi Ogbodo, controller of the Ebonyi Command Correctional Service, in an interview with reporters, said the Afikpo detention center was built to accommodate 160 inmates, but regretted that the facility has approximately 248 inmates.

He said: “In practice, the number of people released cannot decongest our detention center but it has come a long way and as the Chief Justice said, we still expect him to release more. detained and give bail to others, “Ogbodo said. (NAA)
