Port Harcourt, Nigeria – E be like say wahala don show for Dangote refinery as tanker drivers wey dey under Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) don threaten to stop fuel loading from Monday, September 8. Wetin cause this gbege? Na im be say Dangote refinery wan bring in 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks to carry fuel give retailers directly. But this move dey make NUPENG no happy at all.
NUPENG don accuse Dangote management of anti-labour practices wey fit affect their members. Williams Akporeha, the union president, and Afolabi Olawale, the General Secretary, drop statement wey talk say Dangote no gree make new drivers join union. Dem talk say this kain matter dey violate their constitutional right to association. Na waiver for employment dey ground like this o!
Recently, Aliko Dangote, the big boss of the company, don talk say all these new CNG truck drivers no go fit join any union. NUPENG no like the way e dey go, because as dem see am, e be like say communication don break down. Dem don run several meetings to reason with Dangote, but e no work.
NUPENG don dey vex since, talk say dem go take action come September 8 if the matter no change. The union dey feel say all these moves by Dangote go lead to job loss for their members and wahala for fuel supply nationwide. If dem no wakawaka quickly and come to arrangement, na to dey suffer fuel scarcity go dey.
Na so e be now, the tanker drivers show concern say this action fit sabotage their livelihood. Dem don stand by Dangote during construction of the refinery, hoping say go bring jobs come. But as e be now, dem dey feel betrayed as Dangote dey push to fool-up market with new drivers wey no go join union.
NUPENG dey also call on relevant agencies for oil and gas regulatory body to come dey look into this matter before e burst. If nothing change, dem dey plan massive protest wey go cause serious wahala if fuel loading stop. Everybody dey watch how dis drama go unfold because e fit affect plenty Nigerians wey dey rely on fuel.
