Commerce City, Colorado — Colorado Rapids midfielder Djordje Mihailovic made headlines over the weekend by leading his team to victory in the Rocky Mountain Cup against rivals Real Salt Lake. The pivotal match ended with a 1-0 score, thanks to Mihailovic’s game-winning goal in the 70th minute.
The win marked an important turnaround for the Rapids after enduring a streak of five winless matches. Mihailovic, a Designated Player, celebrated his fifth Team of the Matchday honor this season for his outstanding performance, which included not just scoring but orchestrating plays from the midfield.
The contest was tightly contested, with both teams exchanging chances until the decisive moment arrived. Substitute Ted Ku-DiPietro and defender Reggie Cannon executed a clever combination on the right wing, allowing Cannon to cross the ball into the box where Cole Bassett was waiting. Bassett, with his back to the goal, skillfully set up Mihailovic, who one-timed a shot into the far corner, clinching the game for the Rapids.
Mihailovic’s goal was recognized as the Energy Moment of the Matchday by Major League Soccer, highlighting its significance in the tightly fought series. The midfielder’s scoring tally for the season now stands at six goals, and he has made a total of nine contributions (6g, 3a) in 2025.
After the match, Mihailovic shared his thoughts on the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of the victory. “I think there was a lot said after the game Wednesday against San Diego,” he stated. “We knew that it was a tough performance Wednesday, but we also knew that this is the most important game of the year for us.”
He highlighted the need for a turnaround, stating, “This game can be a turning point. You know, flip the page, like I said, and that’s exactly what it is.” His leadership has been crucial as he has worn the captain’s armband since April 12.
The Rapids will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next fixtures, aiming to solidify their position in the league standings. Coach Oscar Pareja has been vocal about the team’s need to find consistency moving forward, especially after a challenging stretch.
