Dept. Q: Na Comedy or Crime Series We Dey Watch?

Edinburgh, Scotland – E don happen o! Netflix don land with new series wey dem call Dept. Q, and e dey make people talk wella. Na based on book by Danish crime maestro Jussi Adler-Olsen wey sabi how to make wahala from small matter. But no be only plot wey dey shine for this series, as e get fine shooting and sharp writing wey go tickle your belle.

The story na about Carl Mørck, a grumpy police detective wey dey play Matthew Goode, wey find himself inside cold case department after e lead one raid wey no end well. One policeman die, and him partner go disable. Na wah! Now, Carl dey carry wetin e no fit handle for body as e dey waka among Scots. Na so e dey sulk pass for first episode when e go see psychologist Rachel Irving, played by Kelly Macdonald. E go just dey vex like wetin dey pepper am.

As dem come pair am with Rose (Leah Byrne) and Akram (Alexej Manvelov), wey be small police department misfits, e suppose make sense, but the guy just dey cramp style. Akram na Syrian refugee wey get some disturbing skills wey dey make everybody dey wonder wetin e don do for him country. Wetin you think? Na film or real life we go fit call am?

From the other side of story, we dey see Merritt Lingard (Chloe Pirrie), one prosecutor wey lose big case when e no fit convince jury say local crime lord kill him wife. Omo, e no funny at all! But e come disappear with him brother wey get mental disability while dem dey carry ferry. This na wahala wey carry us enter department Q, as na dem go find am. But hold on, the twist wey come at the end go shock you! Merritt dey captured in metal cylinder, dey torture her and dey ask the kind questions wey no dey make sense. Wetin be all dis na?

While carl dey try solve im own issues and john dey capture am, viewers dey get plenty laugh. E suppose no be serious series, but e turn more comic than anything. E dey clear say e no go fit get serious without making joke of himself. And the therapy sessions wey him dey go with Rachel, some are pure comedy. As she dey ask am, ‘Aren’t you always pissed off at everyone?’ E go just dey look her like wetin she dey talk.

The supporting characters, especially bubbly Rose and Akram wey keep the story lively, dey make everybody forget serious matter. E sweet when Carl’s old partner dey mentor Rose for hospital bed. Na only for this kind series you go see wey vex dey wake person up from hospital to ‘learn work.’ Chai! Na so dem dey chop life.

But, make I ask wetin dey happen for central mystery matter wey no dey gel well. How come one nasty old woman for trailer dey run hyperbaric chamber for four years without anybody noticing? And wetin sense e make to hold person captive for so long just for revenge? Even Count of Monte Cristo go tire with dat kind routine. Na wah o, I dey beg!

All said and done, Dept. Q get plenty well-crafted portions wey go fit shine, but the main mystery no dey hold water. Scott Frank, the creator, fit do better. E get the talent to give us beta story wey no go dey cringy like this one. Make we just dey watch as the series dey develop – who know wetin go happen next!
