Speaking to reporters after a glamorous opening ceremony at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Local Organizing Committee (LOC) co-chair Tonobok Okowa, said the state is not interested in the “host to win” slogan, adding, however, that if other states ‘go to sleep’, Delta Team would sweep all medals.

We are not interested in that slogan of welcoming to win.

But if other states don’t give us the necessary challenge in the competition, we will sweep all the medals.

Our athletes are well prepared and motivated for this National sports festival”, he stated.

Okowa, who is the chairman of the Delta Sports Commission as well as the chairman of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), said he expects strong opposition from other states.

The 10-day sports festival will end on December 10.

Meanwhile, Okowa has said that the LOC will ensure that all facilities built by the state government are maintained for Delta 2022.

President Muhammad Buhari, represented by Sports Minister Sunday Dare, declared the Games open on Wednesday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium amid fanfare.

Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, Sokoto State Aminu Tambuwal and Bayelsa State Douye Diri.
