He said that the Defense Attachés System had a crucial role to play in forging understanding and cooperation with security and defense architectures in their respective countries of accreditation.

The minister said that the myriad of security threats across the country continue to jeopardize economic growth and food security.

He said that food security had also been exacerbated by flooding across the country.

This, according to him, makes it imperative that the various security agencies collaborate more to address the problems in order to create an environment conducive for economic activities to flourish and attract foreign direct investment.

He said the conference was a vital mechanism through which the agency would assess, formulate and review strategic policies in line with evolving national and global security challenges.

“A cursory look at the security challenges in Nigeria today reveals that new dimensions in the fight against insecurity through the kinetic and non-kinetic approach are yielding positive results in the fight against terrorism and banditry.

Northwest and Center-North Zones

“Particularly, in the Northwest and Center-North Zones.

“However, the coastal states of the South-South region are still plagued by illegal oil sourcing, piracy and militancy.

Indigenous Peoples of Biafra

“While the southeast is challenged by the secessionist activities of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network.

“The southwestern region is equally facing secessionist leanings as well as occasional tension between herders and farmers.

“Distinguishing the threats Nigeria is currently facing and understanding its socio-geographical context is critical to tailoring appropriate and long-lasting countermeasures.

“Sadly, the prevalence of these threats has continued to jeopardize our economic growth and food security.

“This has been exacerbated with flooding across the country,” he said.

Magashi therefore said that the participants must assess the shared vision of stemming the tide of insecurity through the integrated efforts of all government entities.

He also urged the participants to harness the potential of the defense attaché system to effectively contribute to the country’s security efforts.

“Without a doubt, many countries, including Nigeria, have continued to devise new strategies to improve defense and security systems in order to meet ever-evolving security challenges.

“In our effort to address the myriad of security challenges facing our nation, we require the cooperation of our allies in the areas of capability development, acquisition, and provision of spare parts for our defense equipment.

Defense Advisors and Attach

“Therefore, we rely heavily on you, the Defense Advisors and Attachés, to foster bilateral and multilateral relationships with our allies,” he said.

The defense minister urged the participants to develop strategies to improve the country’s defense and security.

DIA Headquarters

Magashi had previously inaugurated some projects executed to enhance its operations, as well as the placement of blocks for the expansion of the DIA Headquarters complex.
