Cricket: We want to host more ICC tournaments in Nigeria – NCF president

The President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Mr Uyi Akpata, on Friday in Abuja said the Federation wanted to host more International Cricket Council tournaments in the country.

Akpata disclosed this to newsmen after the opening match of Nigeria against Rwanda of the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa division 2 qualifiers.

Nigeria defeated their counterparts Rwanda by 10 wickets in their first match.

According to the president, NCF have two main objectives which they must achieve at the end of the 10 days tournament.
“We want to make sure that Nigeria host the tournament properly which will lead to a good destination to host more ICC events.
“We have two modern pitches in Abuja; we have standard pitches in Edo and Lagos which were certified by ICC itself.
“We want to make sure that the hosting team (team Nigeria) wins at the end of the tournament, they have tried their best in the first match.
“They have shown the results of being in camp for the past six weeks, working tremendously day and night,” he said.
The president commended the team for winning their first game.
“We want the team to continue to work hard to win all their games which is part of our objectives.
“Our under 19 boys are going to show us their potential in the competition.
“We want to show our hospitality to all teams present here, we want to show that we have decent facilities to host the tournament.

NAN reports that the ICC U-19 men’s cricket World Cup Africa division 2 qualifiers, which started on Friday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, is expected to end on Oct. 9.
