COVID-19: PSC puts 6 states, FCT on red alert

By Abujah Racheal

The Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 has put six states and the FCT Abuja on red alert to ensure a safe and healthy national celebration of Eid-al-Kabir.

The action followed confirmation of the Delta variant of COVID-19, the growing number of infections and hospitalizations in the country.

PSC Chairman and Federation Government Secretary Mr. Boss Mustapha said this in a statement made available to the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) on Saturday evening in Abuja.

He listed affected states like Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Kaduna, Kano and Plateau as well as the CTF.

Mustapha said the red alert was part of the preventive measures against a third wave of the pandemic in the country.

The SGF, however, warned that all states in the federation should increase their readiness and continue to apply all protocols in place, given the greater ease of spread of the Delta variant.

“These steps are essential as we begin to see worrying early signs of an increase in cases in Nigeria.

“The PSC will continue to minimize the risk of importing variants of concern into the country by strengthening surveillance at all points of entry (POE), enforcing existing quarantine protocols and maintaining current restrictive measures against travelers. from India, Brazil, Turkey and South Africa.

“The PSC congratulates the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir. However, he urges all state governments and religious leaders to be aware of the potential for the virus to spread wider at large gatherings, ”he said.

According to him, the PSC therefore recommends the following preventive measures for a safe celebration of Eid-el-Kabir:

“Decentralization of Eid prayer to neighborhood Friday prayer mosques (outside); Suspension of Durbar activities; and Observation of limitations on all indoor gatherings.

“Nigerians and all residents are reminded to always stay safe,” Mustapha further advised. (NAA)
