COVID-19: Union urges Nigerians in S/Africa to obey new lockdown rules

By Emmanuel Afonne

Nigerian community leaders in South Africa have urged Nigerians living in that country to strictly adhere to its new COVID-19 lockdown rules.

The President of the Nigerian Union of South Africa (NUSA), Mr. Adetola Olubajo, made the appeal Monday in an e-mailed statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) from Pretoria, South Africa. South.

Olubajo said the new lockdown rules were aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

“We are aware of the new lockdown announced by the South African government. It aims to control the spread of COVID-19.

“We call on our employees to follow guidelines to avoid contracting the virus.

“On a sad note, we regret to say that some Nigerians have died from COVID-19 since last year.

“We don’t want a Nigerian to die from the virus again, so it has become imperative to stay safe and avoid contracting the virus.

“We have put in place a monitoring mechanism to contact Nigerians in emergencies caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“NUSA leadership in provinces and parishes will liaise with the national secretariat in areas of assistance,” Olubajo said in the statement sent to NAN.

He explained that part of the arrangement was to contact medical staff across South Africa to help members get information and treatment.

“First and foremost, we implore Nigerians to remain law-abiding by obeying the laws of our host country and to avoid acts that may put us in difficulty and tarnish the image of our country.

“Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria, long live the Republic of South Africa,” he added. (NAA)
