COVID-19: Clinical psychologist warns against false information, theories

By Oluwafunke Ishola

Clinical psychologist Dr Perpetua Chia has warned that high consumption of false information and conspiracy theories about COVID-19 could lead to mental health degradation, serious illness and death.

Chia, head of the clinical psychology department at Makurdi Federal Medical Center, revealed this in a statement Thursday in Lagos.

She said the rate at which false information about COVID-19 is being consumed is causing further damage to people’s mental health and increasing the number of deaths from the disease.

She said heightened anxiety about the pandemic could release chemicals and hormones that could affect the body’s immune system.

Chia, also vice president of the Nigerian Association of Clinical Psychologists, called on the federal and state governments to take more action to stem the tide of false information about the pandemic.

She noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has created global panic and major health emergencies with rising death figures that have reached millions.

“The state of shock and anxiety has not yet abated despite the efforts of medical science to provide relief and solution,” she said.

The clinical psychologist said the outbreak was characterized by public anxiety and advised the public to remain calm and adhere to all necessary scientific advice.

She also advised people to access information from authoritative and trusted sources, engage in activities that would help them relax, and eat healthy meals to boost their immune systems.
