COVID-19: Belgium detects virus in fully vaccinated people

About 0.32% of fully vaccinated people in Belgium have tested positive for the coronavirus, the country’s health authority Sciensano said on Friday.

Sciensano said as of May 31, 4,526 out of 1.4 million fully immune people had tested positive for the virus.

Belgium considers people who have received full immunity two weeks after the last required shot.

Many coronavirus vaccines require two injections, those that received only one dose are not included in the figures.

More than two-thirds of people who tested positive for the coronavirus had not developed any symptoms.

“These results are an important indication of the effectiveness of vaccines against Covid-19 in Belgium.

“Since most cases were asymptomatic, the majority of infections in vaccinated people were only discovered through contact tracing or by chance, for example when a vaccinated person was tested for coronavirus after returning from home. ‘foreign.

“This means that the actual number of coronavirus infections could be higher because we may not have registered all cases,” Sciensano said.

She explains that the figures showed that vaccination offered a high level of protection for people against the disease.

She said it is still not clear whether those vaccinated can transmit the virus, but hopes results for Belgium will be available soon. (dpa / NAN)
