Abuja, Nigeria – Just when you think wahala don settle, our dear Federal High Court don scatter ground for the NYSC as dem declare say women fit wear skirts during their service! This one na wah, as e don take reach many to compliance before. On June 13, 2025, Justice Hauwa Yilwa don talk say NYSC sabi not let girls wear skirt na breach of their human rights and make dem dey vex for dem religion.
The case start when two paddy women, Ogunjobi Blessing and Ayuba Vivian, find demself for wahala level because NYSC tell dem say trousers na the only correct uniform. Na so the two of them carry matter go court where dem join forces because they dey say trousers dey against their Christian beliefs. You know say dem even cite Bible for am – Deuteronomy 22:5, wey talk say women no suppose wear man’s clothes!
Dem court na chop the case well, well and hold say NYSC no fit play God for dem life by enforcing trousers as uniform. Justice Yilwa reason say this one dey violate Section 38(1) of 1999 Constitution wey talk say everybody get right to freedom of religion.
As dem gree say NYSC dey wrong, the judge don drop some serious orders. First, dem don tell NYSC make dem recognize skirt as part of uniform for any female corps member wey get genuine religious reason. Secondly, dem order NYSC make dem give these two ladies their discharge certificates wey dem collect turn turn like eh… wetin we go call am? No fit explain as so na trend for country. On top all this, dem also make dem award ₦500,000 each as compensation for the stress wey NYSC put dem through. E no reach the ₦10 million wey dem ask for, but at least e be like say dem dey see money small.
Justice Yilwa no carry mouth hide am as e yan say harassment wey these ladies face na serious infringement of their rights. Chai! Imagine the level of embarrassment just because una no fit wear skirts? The judge talk say NYSC be like say dey no sabi the meaning of basic human rights. Na so dis gist be. Dem dey try push uniformity wey dey choke person for neck!
So, if you dey plan join NYSC anytime soon, just know say you fit wear your skirt waka! This ruling dey shake table well well for religious freedom upandan this side.
