Belem, Brazil – The talk of the town this week be COP30, di 30th edition of di Conference of Parties wey don kick off for Brazil. As climate change don turn global wahala, countries come waka come gather, dey reason how dem go fit save di planet sharp-sharp. Dis one na two-week gbege wey go see delegates from all over di world dey flex dem negotiation muscles.
For dis year, di focus no be about creating big stories, but wetin dem fit do about di ones wey don dey on ground. Na wetin dem dey call implementation. Brazil wey dey host di event don promise make dem do all di possible to restore confidence among countries, so wetin e go be, no be new promises but action wey go follow past promises wey dem don make!
Key issues wey dey pepper di talks include air pollution, forest conservation, and di principle of common but differentiated responsibilities (no be only for Nigeria wey dem dey share responsibilities, o!). Developing countries dey complain say di developed countries no dey hold dem end of di bargain when e come to finance and technology support. Dem dey vex well well, and who go blame dem? Dem still dey watch di US as dem don show “walk away” skills after dem run from di Paris Agreement in 2022.
Dem say e no go sweet if countries where dey vex just decide to come out too, because na dis forum dem fit take settle di global reason. Brazil’s COP30 President, André Corrêa do Lago, don talk say di climate meetings dey good for negotiation but no dey deliver results well, and dis time, dem want run am different. E mean say dem go pay more attention to how to adapt to climate wahala, especially for di guys wey dey suffer most.
Plus, we hear say about 600 different initiatives don show face for dis climate meetings since di 2015 agreement, but wahala be say only 300 of dem still dey survive. Na wah! We fit imagine say dem don forget dia work, abi dem don cross di river without di canoe? Dis time, Brazil dey hopeful say dem go fit seal some meaningful agreements wey go help people adapt better to di effects of climate change.
From India side, dem dey observe di whole thing, especially as dem never drop dia own Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDC) plan for 2035. As COP30 dey waka, India fit use am as opportunity to drop dia NAP (National Adaptation Plan) wey dem don prepare. E go be wise move.
As COP don dey hot and di eyes of di world dey shine on Brazil, we go see how dem go fit bring back trust and take serious steps wey go benefit all of us. Dis na di way we fit save di planet and plan for di future, so make we dey pray say dis one go shine small light in di dark.
