Kaduna, Nigeria — Comrade M. B. Muhammad, one of the victims from the 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train abduction, recently shared an incredible story about encountering one of his kidnappers at a local mosque. The encounter took place at Shema Mosque near Bakin Ruwa Junction in the Rigasa community of Kaduna State, just days ago.
Muhammad recounted that, after attending the Isha’i prayer, he came face-to-face with a man he recognized as Abubakar, a member of the group that attacked the train on March 28, 2022. “As the imam finished the prayer, I suddenly saw this man. I couldn’t believe my eyes,” he stated in a social media post.
During their interaction, Abubakar claimed to have repented from his former life of crime and now supports his family by working as a motorcycle rider, locally known as ‘okada.’ “He told me he has turned a new leaf, and I felt it was important to hear him out,” said Muhammad.
After a lengthy discussion, Muhammad learned that while some members of Abubakar’s gang had been killed, others continued their activities. “I was shocked at how some have chosen to persist in violence, but I also felt compassion for the ones who want to change,” he added.
In a show of goodwill, Muhammad forgave him for past transgressions and gave him some charity. “I told him that I forgave the pain he and his accomplices caused me, and I sincerely wished him well in his new journey,” he expressed. “Oh Lord of all the worlds, guide us all and guide them too,” reflecting on his hopes for the future.
This encounter highlights the complexities of forgiveness and repentance in the face of trauma. After confirming the details of his story with reporters from Daily Trust, Muhammad emphasized his commitment to moving forward and letting go of resentment.
He urged others to consider the paths of those who have made the choice to change instead of holding onto anger. His sense of compassion stands out as he navigates his own healing process following such a harrowing experience.
