NAN) The Promoters of One-Nigeria Ambassadors Club (PRONIG), an NGO, has donated solar-powered street lights to the Abuja Municipal Area Council Housing Estate police post as a way of giving back to the society.
Dr Tega Edache, the President of PRONIG, while unveiling the project in Abuja on Saturday, said that the project was aimed at adding value to the service of the Nigeria Police and the community.
Edache said that the organisation had earlier provided whiteboards and exercise books to primary school pupils and giving monetary donations to the Kanu Heart Foundation to meet the needs of Nigerians, among others.
He said that lighting had been an issue in the community as the police post, which was an entry point to the community was usually dark at night.
“PRONIG members believe that the Nigeria of our collective dream is realisable.
We don’t only believe it but we endeavour to put our belief to work.
” Recently, we observed that the environment at the entrance of the estate where our policemen are stationed while carrying out their routine checks at night is usually dark as they carry out their duties with the use of a torchlight.
” We reckoned that providing adequate illumination around that area would enable them to do their job better and contribute to their security.
” Consequently, we tasked ourselves and mobilised funds as much as possible to procure materials and labour for the construction of the solar-powered street lights that we have gathered here to unveil.
” Today, unveiling the solar-powered street lights has presented another opportunity for all of us to be proud of ourselves and believe more than ever before that good things can and shall continue to happen to us and Nigeria,” he said.
He, therefore, called on Nigerians to join in the league of those that believe in the future of the country by providing to the community, saying that doing this would trickle down to the larger society.
Edache called on Nigerians to preach peace and unity as the country approached the 2023 elections, saying this was the only way to go to have a violence free elections.
Meanwhile, Hon. Zadna Dantani, Supervising Councillor for Works, Housing, Land and Survey, AMAC, commended the group for the gesture, saying it would help improve the efficiency of the police.
Dantani said that the lighting would expand the business time in the community as well as help to get rid of criminal element in the area.
” This has brought joy to this community and light is very important in human life and this is to make sure this place is safeguarded.
” Government is a responsibility of all and we don’t need to wait for government to do everything.
We are assuring you that we are going to do more than what we are seeing now.
“The local government as a body which is closer to the people will continue to synergise for the betterment of the people in the community,” he said.
He, therefore, urged the police officers attached to the community to take adequate care of the facility provided them so that bigger projects could come from other well-meaning Nigerians.
Mr Mike Ejiofor, the Chairman, AMAC Residence Association called on Nigerians to support the Nigeria Police to carry out their functions in securing the lives and property of the people.
“It takes a good heart to give back to the society from the little we have; if everyone contributes their quota, it will go a long way in developing the country.
Responding, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Ali Abdul, the Officer-in Charge of the station, accepted the donation on behalf of the Inspector- General of the Police, while thanking the group for the project, saying it was an achievement to the entire police force.
