Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Meets Families of Children Who Passed Away in Scenery Park

  The Portfolio Committee on Women Young People and Disabled People yesterday visited the families of the 21 children who tragically passed away at the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park in East London recently At the meeting at the Scenery Park Community Hall the committee was joined by their counterparts in the Eastern Cape Legislature district councilors and the president of the National Youth Development Agency NYDA The families were joined by leaders from the Scenery Park Residential Association and church leaders The chairperson of the committee Mrs Nonhlanhla Ncube Ndaba thanked the families for being available for the committee s visit and for agreeing to meet under one roof We realize that it was not an easy decision for you to leave your homes where families grieve together and you accepted our request to come into this room to give us the opportunity to say to all of you I m sorry and take comfort she said Ms Ncube Ndaba The purpose of the visit the chair said was for the committee to express its deep and heartfelt condolences to the families and to engage with all relevant stakeholders including the South African Police Service Buffalo City Council Enyobeni Tavern and the Alcoholic Beverage Board which licenses taverns Ms Ncube Ndaba said It is not the herd of goats and cows that have died They are the souls of our dearest children and there must be convincing answers about their death The parents of the deceased children urged the committee to help them speed up the investigation into the reasons for the death of their children They also appealed to the committee to hold the tavern the police and the Alcoholic Beverage Board accountable for the tragedy The mourners who were present are the Mahlakahlaka Malangeni Rangile Ncandana Monelo Sobekwa Mgangala Thukuthe Bhoyiya Jamens Velaphi Ngqoza Methuko Bekiso Wexu Mdangayi and Nkani families The NYDA President expressed NYDA s condolences to the families and said he would embark on an aggressive campaign to end the culture of alcohol and drug use among youth He called on parents residential organizations and other community actors to help in this campaign As part of its monitoring visit to East London the committee will meet today with the owner of the Enyobeni Tavern the Alcoholic Beverage Board Buffalo City Council SAPS and NYDA Committee members will remain in east London until Wednesday to attend the mass funeral for the deceased children

Nonhlanhla Ncube-Ndaba

The chairperson of the committee, Mrs. Nonhlanhla Ncube-Ndaba, thanked the families for being available for the committee’s visit and for agreeing to meet under one roof. “We realize that it was not an easy decision for you to leave your homes where families grieve together and you accepted our request to come into this room to give us the opportunity to say to all of you ‘I’m sorry and take comfort,’” she said. East London

As part of its monitoring visit to East London, the committee will meet today with the owner of the Enyobeni Tavern, the Alcoholic Beverage Board, Buffalo City Council, SAPS and NYDA. Committee members will remain in east London until Wednesday to attend the mass funeral for the deceased children.
