Cholera: Rivers LG chairman vows to remedy water scarcity

By Ikuru Lizzy

Mr. Erastus Awortu, chairman of the Andoni Rivers Local Government Zone, said the council administration would tackle the problem of water scarcity to stem the threat of cholera.

He made the promise on Wednesday to Ibot-Irem, the local Andoni rivers council, during his tour of eight communities recently sacked by the sectarian gang warfare.

He said the administration had launched a water crosslinking project as a proactive step to control the cholera outbreak ahead of the dry season typically associated with the disease in the region.

He added that “Andoni is an area where cholera is almost endemic, mainly because we lack clean water; thus, the supply of potable water is one of the cardinal concerns of my administration.

“We will make sure to banish Andoni cholera. “

Awortu explained that if the council administration worked to ensure the safe return of the displaced, it would also ensure that the region was no longer vulnerable to cholera.

He said that “just as we try to ensure the safe return of displaced people, we also find it necessary to provide safe drinking water to communities to combat cholera, which results in deaths during the dry season.

“The first phase of the water project will be the installation of a reservoir with a capacity of 20,000 gallons that will crosslink the water to Ibot-Irem and neighboring communities.

“The project is underway and will be inaugurated soon.

Deploring the high level of damage to property and the loss of life suffered during clashes between sectarian gangs, Awortu accused the population of being responsible for lasting peace in the region.

“Many innocent people have died as a result of persistent cult wars, especially in some communities like Ibot-Irem, Dema and Ajakajak, the crises worsened over the past year as people finally fled the area.

“When we took office, we took the first step by visiting those who were displaced and who took refuge in Kaa, in the Khana local government area and assured them their safe return.

“With the full cooperation of Rivers Police Commissioner Friday Eboka and Governor Nyesom Wike, we have deployed security personnel to the affected communities and today peace has been restored.

“We were able to achieve this in a short period of time because we are resolute in our commitment to peace, things are gradually returning to normal in the once deserted areas,” he said.

He also promised to get in touch with the relevant authorities to ensure that a police station is returned to the area, adding that there had been no police presence there for a long time. (NAA)
