NEW YORK, United States of America, January 10, 2022 / APO Group / –

“UNICEF is outraged by the recent airstrikes against camps for internally displaced persons and refugees in Tigray, northern Ethiopia.

“The attacks on January 5-7 have reportedly left dozens of civilians, including children, dead and many more injured.

“Refugee camps and settlements for internally displaced persons, including schools that house displaced children and families and essential facilities that provide them with humanitarian services, are civilian objects. Failure to respect them and protect them from attack may constitute a violation of international humanitarian law.

“More than a year after the conflict broke out in Tigray, all parties to the conflict continue to commit brutal acts of violence, including serious violations against children, throughout northern Ethiopia.

“UNICEF renews its call for an immediate cessation of hostilities. We urge all parties to the conflict to build on the initial signs of progress in recent weeks, adhere to international human rights, humanitarian and refugee law, facilitate humanitarian access and protect children from harm. “
