UN chief condemns Zamfara attacks

UN Secretary General António Guterres has strongly condemned the attacks carried out over the weekend in the Nigerian state of Zamfara in which dozens of civilians were killed.

The UN chief, who spoke through his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

Some 200 or more people were reportedly killed in villages in northwestern Nigeria‘s Zamfara state during deadly retaliation by armed bandits following military airstrikes on their hideouts.

The bandits raided five villages in the local government areas of Anka and Bukkuyum from Tuesday to Wednesday and left a trail of blood.

The bandits set fire to all five villages, killed many residents and mutilated their bodies.

As of Saturday morning, 200 people had been buried at funerals.

The Secretary General urged the Nigerian authorities to spare no effort to bring those responsible for these heinous crimes to justice.

Guterres reaffirms the solidarity and support of the United Nations to the Nigerian government and people in their fight against terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime.
