Catanzaro Don Hammer Sassuolo for 2-0 Win for Serie B Glory

Catanzaro, Calabria — On May 9, 2025, the Catanzaro football team pulled off a stunning 2-0 victory against league leaders Sassuolo during a match that showcased their resilience and skill.

Despite facing some challenges early in the game, Catanzaro dominated the second half, scoring two critical goals by T. Biasci and F. Bonini. The victory keeps them in sixth place but brings them closer to the coveted fifth position, especially with the simultaneous loss of their rivals, Juve Stabia.

The match began with controversy as early as the third minute when fans cried for a penalty after a possible handball by Sassuolo’s F. Romagna. However, the referee chose to let the match continue. Sassuolo’s D. Berardi had a chance to score in the seventh minute but missed the target, sending the ball wide.

At the 17th minute, Sassuolo’s Filippo Romagna took a long-range shot that just sailed over the crossbar. As the game continued, Catanzaro’s defense held strong despite sustained pressure from Sassuolo.

In a notable moment at the 31st minute, Catanzaro’s goalkeeper M. Pigliacelli made a brilliant save, thwarting an attempt from A. Laurienté just as he approached the penalty area. Despite Sassuolo’s efforts, including a free-kick attempt by D. Berardi that went over the bar, the first half ended with a score of 0-0.

The second half saw a shift in momentum. Catanzaro broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when S. Pontisso’s cross found T. Biasci, who expertly headed the ball past the Sassuolo goalkeeper, G. Satalino. This goal energized the visiting team, while Sassuolo struggled to regain their composure.

Sassuolo pushed for an equalizer, but Pigliacelli remained a formidable presence, making critical saves including a corner kick attempt from A. Laurienté in the 56th minute and a header from Romagna in the 76th.

In stoppage time, Catanzaro sealed their victory with an additional goal from F. Bonini in the 90+1 minute, further solidifying their impressive performance. The final score stood at 2-0.

The coach for Catanzaro, Fabio Caserta, praised his team’s effort and resilience, noting, “Every player showed tremendous character. We played as a unit, and it paid off tonight.” With this win, Catanzaro sends a strong message to the league as they continue to chase the top spots.
