Canada’s Andreescu and Shapovalov Win Three-Set Matches in Miami Open Second Round

Andreescu Upsets Sakkari

In the Miami Open second round, both Bianca Andreescu and Denis Shapovalov won their respective matches in three sets. Andreescu, who upset seventh-seeded Maria Sakkari, used consistency to her advantage by winning the majority of points when the Greek missed her first serve. Andreescu also committed only 31 unforced errors compared to Sakkari’s 54. This was the third meeting between the two players that went the distance, with the Canadian coming out on top 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Shapovalov Regains Form in Win Over Pella

Denis Shapovalov won his match against Guido Pella of Argentina after struggling in the early season. In his victory, he benefitted from his strong forehand and Pella’s inability to do much damage off the ground. Despite a more erratic second set, Shapovalov found success in the third with his powerful game on full display. This win is only his second out of the last seven matches.

Andreescu Advances to Third Round, Fernandez Eliminated

Although Bianca Andreescu advanced to the third round, Leylah Annie Fernandez was eliminated by ninth-seeded Belinda Bencic, losing 48% of her first serve points and 70% of her second. Bencic, a semifinalist in last year’s Miami Open, broke Fernandez five out of six times and won the match 6-1, 6-1. This was the fifth head-to-head meeting between the Canadian and Swiss players, with Fernandez losing all five matches.

Looking Ahead

Félix Auger-Aliassime will play his opening match against Thiago Monteiro on Saturday, while Andreescu will play the winner of the match between Coco Gauff and Sara Sorribes Tormo. Leylah Annie Fernandez will look to gain momentum at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers in Vancouver, B.C.
