CAN, lawmaker condemn abduction of children over land dispute in Ebonyi

By Christian Ogbonna

The Nigerian Christian Association (CAN) in Ebonyi on Tuesday condemned the abduction of children from the Enyigba community in the Abakaliki local government area following a land dispute .

The Enyibichiri community and community in the Ikwo local government area were engaged in a protracted land dispute despite permanent land demarcation by the Ebonyi government.

Ebonyi Governor David Umahi on Monday urged kidnappers of the children to release them within seven days with a pledge of amnesty.

President of CAN in Ebonyi, the Rev Abraham Nwali told Abakaliki on Tuesday that the association supported the state government’s seven-day ultimatum to the kidnappers.

He made the declaration in a press release published at the end of a meeting that CAN had with the two communities.

Nwali, who explained that the meeting was aimed at resolving the projected conflict between the Izzi and Ikwo clans, noted that the two communities had confirmed to CAN that there was no war between them.

“We condemn the kidnapping of children from the Enyigba community due to a land conflict.

“CAN joins the governor in urging the kidnappers to release the children in the interests of peace.

“CAN, together with the state government, calls on all residents of Ebonyi to go about their normal business.

“We also urge the young people to avoid causing trouble and the two communities, Enyigba and Enyibichiri to respect the law,” he said.

Also reacting to the evolution of the situation, Mr. Sylvester Ogbaga, representing the federal constituency of Abakaliki / Izzi, welcomed the measure taken by CAN in the resolution of conflicts in the Ebonyi communities.

Ogbaga also expressed concern over the abduction of children in the Enyigba community and urged those involved to release them.

“There is no gain or reason for the brothers to fight. Some disbelievers have kidnapped our children; what is the gain? My advice to the kidnappers is to release the children, ”he stressed. (NAA)
