CAN at 45: Dogara advocates better unity among Christians

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara urged Christians to be better united and to do their part to overcome the challenges facing the nation.

Dogara made the appeal at the 45th anniversary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) which was held in Abuja on Friday.

The theme of the event is “The Church and the Doctrine of Regeneration in the Transformation of Nigeria”.

According to Dogara, the unity of the church cannot be overstated as it is important to the body of Christ.

Dogara, who was the chairman of the event, said unity was God’s longing for the church to be one and not the crowds that overflowed into the church.

“We love crowds but we don’t love people, if we love people and their souls, that’s the essence of unity.

“If we unite as a church, nothing will be impossible for us to achieve,” said Dogara.

Prof Dapo Asaju, former vice chancellor of Ajayi Crowder University, in his keynote address called for unity in the church, saying it had not been achieved.

“Regeneration of the hearts and minds of Nigerians is necessary for the fundamental transformation of the nation.

“The church needs to heal itself first and the leaders should wake up and stop playing with the church but take on the roles of stewards of Nigeria’s affairs,” he said.

Professor Vincent Anigbogu, director general of the Institute for National Transformation International said Christians have been beaten and humiliated by the series of challenges they did not anticipate.

“The church needs to regenerate and improve its doctrine if it is to survive current and emerging global trends,” he said.

Anigbogu advised CAN to tell people the truth to build themselves up, saying there was a lot of deception in the country.

“CAN can build a pharmaceutical industry, produce its own drugs that will be used to solve the health problems that surround the nation,” he said.

He said there was a need to train more priests in conflict resolution and to uplift people like Joseph to rise up in the pressing issues of the land.

CAN National President Reverend Samson Ayokunle said CAN was created to promote peace and unity among Christians and to speak out for the oppressed.

He said CAN would be strengthened as its members encouraged churches to exist out of indifference and nonchalant attitude towards the elections.

“The church has a sufficient population to effect positive change in governments at all levels,” he said.
