Businessman jailed 6 months for stealing cellphone

An Area Court in Jos on Monday sentenced a 20-year old businessman, Abba Yakubu to 6 months in prison for stealing a cellphone.

A panel of two magistrates, Ghazali Adam and Hyacinth Dolnaan, sentenced Yakubu after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

The panel also gave him an option of N5,000 fine or 3 months in prison and compensation of N45,000 or another 3 months in prison.

They said the judgment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such criminal acts.
Inspt Monday Dabit
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Inspt Monday Dabit, told the court that the case was reported on May 5, at the ‘C’ Division Police station by one Uju Nwuche of Niger Avenue, Jos, by the complainant .
The prosecutor said that the convict stole the phone valued at N45,000 and gave it to one Ibrahim, now at large.
Penal Code Law
The offence is punishable under the provisions of Section 272 of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
