BUK launches skills acquisition program for students

Bayero University, BUK, Kano has launched a modern skills acquisition center in the Dean of Student Affairs of the institution.

Speaking during the launch ceremony on Thursday, the university’s vice chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu-Abbas, said the launch of the center was part of his promises to improve the well-being of the university’s students.

According to him, the center will train students to learn tailoring and makeup designs so that they will be self-sufficient after graduation.

The VC added that skills, if taken more seriously, would be a real source of income and job creation, as the government no longer provides adequate employment for the abundant youth.

He said: “Today is another important milestone for me, as the University is witnessing another gigantic step to improve the well-being of students through the skills acquisition platform.

“This has happened just two months after the University launched an employment scheme that employed 125 students as part-time workers,” stressed the rector.

He said that students have already started to enjoy their salaries, adding that according to the evaluation, they are working efficiently.

He urged recipients to use the facilities provided judiciously and use their time efficiently to learn, so that after graduation they will remember the University for providing education and entrepreneurial skills.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the Directorate would continue to explore many other avenues and opportunities to strengthen the well-being of students.

He commended the dean, Prof. Shamsuddeen Umar, for establishing the center and for exemplifying its leadership qualities that are focused on improving the well-being of students.

Speaking previously, the Dean expressed his gratitude to the Vice Chancellor for initiating such commendable projects, noting that the VC’s penchant for well-being will always be appreciated.

He said that the benefited students will learn tailoring, hairdressing, makeup and headdress, and said the idea is to expand the skills to many students.

The Dean noted that many Old Campus students had previously benefited from the skills acquisition program conducted by the Dean.

The Vice Dean, Dr. Maryam Liman, tasked the students to make the maximum use of the facilities to learn various skills, noting that it would be a lifelong treasure for them.
