Building collapse: Group urges Lagos Govt. to overhaul building control agency

Lagos, March 14, 2019 The Centre for Change Initiative, a civil society organisation, has urged the Lagos State Government to overhaul the state’s building and development control agency to stem the incidence of collapsed buildings.

Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, President of the group, in a statement on Thursday in Lagos, said there was the need for appropriate authorities to inspect buildings under construction to check building collapse, and save lives and property.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that many pupils are feared dead and others trapped after a three-storeyed building located at Ita Faji, Lagos Island, collapsed on Wednesday.

The pupils’ school was located on one of the floors of the building.

Okei-Odumakin said: “As concerned stakeholders, we received the news of the collapsed building of a three-storey building in Lagos Island with rude shock and excruciating pains.

“From the available information, the building accommodated a primary school at the last floor.

“The incident occurred at a moment that the nation is still mourning one of our best brains and erudite Scholar, Dr Pius Adesanmi, who was aboard the ill-fated Ethiopian airline on Sunday.

“It is appalling that our building regulatory agencies are not doing enough in this respect.

“We must step up the premium that we place on the lives of Nigerians as human beings’ lives are sacrosanct.

“We commiserate with the parents and guardians of all casualities in the collapse.

“We urge the Lagos State Government to set up a mechanism to overhaul the building and development control agency in order to forestall a reccurrence of such preventable disaster.”
