Buhari set to address UN General Assembly

President Muhammadu Buhari is due to address the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level general debate at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday, the Nigeria news agency reports .

The Nigerian leader would deliver his speech around 9 a.m. (around 2 p.m. Nigerian time) to other world leaders during the morning session.

Buhari will speak on the theme of the Assembly and other global issues.

The theme of the 76th session is “Building Resilience Through Hope – To Recover From COVID-19, To Reconstruct In A Sustainable Way, To Meet The Needs Of The Planet, To Respect The Rights Of People And To Revitalize The United Nations”.

Friday’s session will also feature speeches from leaders from The Gambia, South Sudan, Republic of Benin, Senegal and Germany, among others.

The Nigerian leader has participated in some bilateral meetings with a number of heads of delegations from other countries and heads of international development organizations.

Buhari met the President of Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye, met Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization and also attended the United Nations Food Systems Summit.

Nigerian leaders also held a bilateral meeting with Her Majesty Maxima Zorreguieta, Queen of the Netherlands and participated in a high-level hybrid event, titled “Transformative Actions for Nature and People”.

In addition, the President’s delegation had participated in other high-level meetings such as the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Program of Action on Reparations, Racial Justice and Equality. for people of African descent.

The delegation also attended a high-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, among others.
