Buhari condoles with Paul Unongo over wife’s death

Published

on

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with elder statesman, Paul Unongo, over the passing of his wife, Victoria, urging members of the family to find comfort in the many lives she touched, and transformed with love.

The president, in a statement by his spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, joined the people and government of Benue, particularly friends and associates of the Unongos, in mourning Mama Victoria.

He noted that Mama Victoria lived for the good of others, supporting her husband in his humanitarian gestures, which included looking after orphans, homeless people, the poor and sick.

Buhari believed Unongo’s wife served her people, the nation and humanity with kind heart, and her investments of making life better and easier for others would always be remembered.

The president prayed that God would grant Mama Victoria eternal rest.

Edo Poll: APC supporters commend Buhari for providing level playing field

Published

on

The Buhari Support Organisation (BSO), has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for providing a level playing field for contestants in the just-concluded Edo governorship election.

The BOS said this in statement signed by the Chairman and Secretary of its Enugu State chapter, Chief Anike Nwoga and Mr Godwin Onwusi on Sunday in Abuja.

It described Buhari as a statesmanship and a father of the nation, adding that he had enriched the health of the country’s democracy by observing its core tenet.

“The BSO is happy that Mr President enriched the health of our democracy by observing the core tenets of democracy.

“This, he did, by resisting the temptation to deploy the proverbial federal might in favour of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the BOS said.

Also in another statement, the United Patriots had congratulated Gov. Godwin Obaseki for his re-election as governor of Edo.

The group’s National Chairman, Mr Chukwudi Ezeobika said Obaseki’s victory remained a plus to the country’s democracy and an end to imposition of ill will on the electorate.

The group commended law enforcement agencies for their professional conduct before, during and after the election.

It commended, especially the Police for exhibiting high level of professionalism and devotion at election.

“We salute the courage and perseverance of the Edo  people who turned out in their huge numbers to exercise their franchise and vote for the candidate of their choice.

“We remain resolute in our belief that good governance will enhance more participation of Nigerians in future elections and permanently dislodge the ills of god “fatherism’’ and imposition of candidates on the people against their wish.

“As we approach the Ondo State governorship election scheduled for Oct. 10, we are optimistic that the serenity, security and decorum exhibited by all stakeholders in the nation’s electoral process in Edo, will be brought to bear,” it said.

The group appealed to Nigerian youths to be part of this great struggle to redeem the country and its democracy from abuse.

It said this they could do by protecting and preserving the sanctity of the country’s electoral system, knowing fully well that the future of the country was dependent on such struggle.

Edo Guber: IPAC commends Buhari, INEC, security agencies over peaceful poll

Published

on

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Lagos State has commended President Muhammadu Buhari, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies over the peaceful Edo governorship poll.

IPAC described the poll and its outcome as exemplary and recommended the same for the Ondo governorship poll coming up on Oct.10.

The commendation was made by IPAC Chairman, Mr Tade Ademola,  in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Sunday.

Ademola said that the level playing ground allowed by the President and INEC had further deepened Nigeria’s democracy.

Ademola, who is  also  the Chairman, Alliance for Social Democrats (ASD) in Lagos State, urged that the standard already built in Edo poll should not be compromised in the forthcoming Ondo governorship election on Oct. 31.

“The truth about Edo election is that the people were determined, and that was what won the election. If people are determined everywhere and are not complacent, we will get there.

“It is better this time around, but it can be improved upon. We should be able by now to be conducting our election online.

“In the coming Ondo election, I hope they will not change style and that there will be a level playing ground for all so that only the peoples’ will will prevail.

“If the same template as used in Edo, is used in Ondo election, it will be a progress in the nation’s electoral system.

“Generally, this election was peaceful and fair as we could see. We cannot say 100 per cent perfect, but it was better than what we had in Kogi and Bayelsa,” Ademola said.

According to him, though there are areas to improve upon, the relatively peaceful and credible Edo election is a milestone in the history of elections in recent time.

He said that INEC could improve on timeliness of staff and materials at polling units.

NAN reports that INEC has declared Gov. Godwin Obaseki, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),  winner of the Sept. 19, governorship election in the state.

Obaseki polled a total of 307,955 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who scored 223,619.
