Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno on Sunday inspected some areas on the outskirts of Maiduguri with the aim of reopening agricultural activities that had been abandoned for several years due to the insurgency.

A statement by the governor’s special advisor on communications and strategy, Malam Isa Gusau, said the measure followed President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to resume farming activities.

“The governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, visited the Molai and Dalwa communities on Sunday and also met with security agents, to begin the modalities of reopening agricultural land along this axis, in order to avoid a livelihood crisis.

“Zulum’s decision was in line with Thursday’s directive to the Nigerian military and other security agencies by President Buhari to work with the Borno state government and come up with terms that would allow people to to access their farmland, ”Gusau said.

He explained that the governor also visited Dalwa in the Konduga local government area and then to Ngwom in the Mafa LGA, where he assessed the farmland and interacted with security guards.

Gusau said Zulum had always believed that keeping resettled communities out of farming activities could lead to a severe food crisis in the state, as food aid from foreign and local donors was not sustainable.

He also announced that the governor would also open his personal farm to lead by example and encourage others.

“We have to build resilience, we can’t sit without a livelihood. I will also establish personal farmland along this axis which I will visit on days off, ”Gusau said citing Zulum.

During the visit, Zulum addressed farmers along the Maiduguri – Damboa highway, urging them to resume their farming activities from Monday.

The governor also inspected a 500 housing project in the village of Molai, where he expressed his dissatisfaction with the quality of the work. (NAA)
