Biden to meet top EU officials for trans-Atlantic reset

US President Joe Biden is due to meet with senior EU officials on Tuesday as they attempt to set common goals for global challenges such as the pandemic and what they see as China’s more assertive position.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council Head Charles Michel will welcome Biden to Brussels, with a busy agenda for their talks.

Much of the meeting is expected to show a reset in transatlantic relations after tense years under Donald Trump’s administration.

So far, trade issues have been a cause of major friction between the two partners. But according to an EU official, Tuesday could see a breakthrough.

For 16 years, the Allies were locked in tariff disputes on several fronts. However, the EU official said one of the trade disputes could be set aside semi-permanently.

It is “rather likely” that the two sides will sign a multi-year agreement to drop all tariffs related to their air dispute, the official said.

They accuse each other of unfair state support for the world’s two largest aviation companies – the European consortium Airbus and its American rival Boeing – and have imposed tariffs on aircraft and non-aircraft goods worth billions. of dollars.

In March, the partners agreed to lift tariffs for an initial period of four months.

Another central element of their discussion could be how to better cooperate in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The United States has been pushing for a suspension of patents on Covid-19 vaccines, but the EU is more reluctant, wondering if this is the best way to deal with short-term vaccine shortages.

“I think that’s important enough – the world has a right to know what exactly happened,” another EU official said ahead of the talks.

The two sides could also jointly reiterate their support for a new investigation by the World Health Organization (WHO) into the origins of the coronavirus amid unsubstantiated claims it came from a center in Wuhan, China.

More generally, China’s global influence – already a key theme at G7 and NATO summits in recent days – should feature in their discussions, the official said. (dpa / NAN)
