Beggar docked for harassing assaulting, harassing pedestrians

A 20-year-old beggar, Rasheed Oloyede, on Monday appeared in an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly assaulting and harassing pedestrians.

The police charged Oloyede, with conspiracy, harassment, stealing and engaging in cult activities.

He, however, pleaded not guilty.

Insp. Raphel Doney, the prosecutor, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Aug. 22, about 5 p.m., at Bhojson, Oyingbo bus stop, Ebute Meta.

He alleged that the defendant was arrested while smoking cannabis and threatening members of the public with a cutlass.

He also alleged that the defendant behaved in an indecent and disorderly manner while begging for alms on the road.

The offence,  he said, contravened the provisions of sections 42, 56, 168 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Magistrate M.A. Ajiferuke admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties in like sum who must show proof of evidence of tax payment to the state government.

He has adjourned the case until Sept 9, for mention.
